Maria Schneider and the NEC Jazz Orchestra | Grow Your Art Residency Concert
In this digital concert, Maria Schneider conducts the NEC Jazz Orchestra in a program of her compositions including The Pretty Road, Data Lords, Walking By Flashlight, Gumba Blue, Sputnik and Choro Dançado. The concert was recorded on March 4, 2021 as the final event of the Grow Your Art residency. For more program details: https://necmusic.edu/events/grow-your-art-maria-schneider-residency-concert Maria Schneider’s music has been hailed by critics as “evocative, majestic, magical, heart-stoppingly gorgeous, imaginative, revelatory, riveting, daring, and beyond categorization.” Blurring the lines between genres, her varied commissioners stretch from Jazz at Lincoln Center, to The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, to the American Dance Festival, and include collaboration with David Bowie. She is among a small few to receive Grammys in multiple genres, having received the award in jazz and classical, as well as for her work with David Bowie. Presented by NEC Jazz & Entrepreneurial Musicianship, the 2021 Grow Your Art residency featured Maria Schneider performing with the students of NEC's jazz department, as well as masterclasses, workshops, and panel discussions on music business and entrepreneurship, applicable to artists working in any genre. Finale from Stravinsky's Firebird for Brass Choir
Phoenix Brass Collective presents the majestic Finale from Stravinsky's Firebird. Again the members of PBC perform in separation, still practicing social distancing. This time, however, we tried something a little more refreshing. Used in many slavic literary works, the Firebird is typically portrayed as the highly coveted mark of a difficult journey or quest. Commonly described as having striking eyes and luminous plumage of red and gold, it is a bird that is known for its beauty as well as it’s danger. The bird known as the Phoenix in Greek folklore shares the same physical characteristics with the Firebird but it symbolizes something different: new life arising from the ashes of its predecessor.
